The Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin (German: Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur, abbreviated KPM), also known as the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin and whose products are generally referred to as Berlin porcelain, was founded in 1763 by King Frederick II of Prussia (Frederick the Great). Its true origins, however, date back to three private companies that, under the patronage of the Crown, attempted to establish the production of "white gold" (i.e., porcelain) in Berlin as early as the mid-18th century.
