Pair of small, sculptural swivel chests of drawers. Spain, 1980s.
Measures : 30x35cmH: 38cm
Handcrafted cabinet work pieces created by a carpenter in the 1980s, part of a limited production run, based on a traditional rectilinear structure reinterpreted through a dynamic approach.
Each piece presents as an orthogonal vertical volume, typical of a small classic chest of drawers, yet its uniqueness lies in the drawers themselves: each one can pivot, thereby altering the visual perception of the whole.
A structure that is initially stable and orderly transforms into a variable composition, where movement creates a shifting architectural effect without abandoning its conventional foundation. This system establishes a duality between structural order and compositional freedom, blending functionality, playfulness, and a sculptural quality.
The clean-lined fronts feature recessed circular handles—a subtle detail that reinforces the design's understated elegance while highlighting the structural interplay of the drawers.
Good overall condition, with a few small chips along the edges. There is a missing piece of veneer on the corner of a bottom drawer front (restored) and a few minor surface scratches. It functions well and is very sturdily built; the drawer fronts are beech-veneered MDF, and the interiors are solid wood.
